Am I wasting my time trying to help my friend "change"?

All you can do is explain to him all the reasons you believe he should change, and let him figure it out for himself. Maybe the benefits of living how he wants outweighs him meeting someone special (to him). Just explain the reasons, have him consider them, and let him know that you are ready to help, but still accept him as is.
