Is Wolf Killer a REAL thing?

I just watched CSI: NY. They had a Native American (Montiquan) who was murdered by what they called a "Wolf Killer" - a piece of baleen bunched up & wrapped with catgut. When the gastric juices dissolved enough of the catgut, the baleen would spring open & poke several holes through the intestines. They found the "Wolf Killer" information online, so I wondering if this was a real item.
